A small portion of the photogaphic project appeared with my article "The Bridge of Dreams: Notes on the Bohemian Life on Dotonbori Bridge, Osaka 2000-2002" in "The East," Vol. These shots represent the point where the project began to turn. I was originally inspired by a book by Gary Winograd called, I think, "Beautiful Women." My project soon took another turn in which I went into the social aspects of what I sensed was a miniature "bohemia" on Dotonbori Bridge. I must have shot these photos around 2000 or 2001. For one thing, in terms of colorful clothes the ladies rule the Dotonbori scene. The bridge itself was like a fashion catwalk. Dotonbori Bridge was a special place for weird dress and behavior. The bright colors of the clothing represent a rebellion against the traditional trend to wear subdued colors. It is only recently that hair dye has gone mainstream-even in the secondary schools which used to be insanely strict. Let me say a little on the rational of all of this.
